Will rain affect my mobility scooter?

No matter how often you check the weather forecasts, British weather is predictably unpredictable and can change without warning, so it’s no surprise that there will be times when you get caught out in the rain unexpectedly. Many customers of mobility scooters often wonder how rain will affect their product and whether they can use their scooter when it’s raining outside. Here we will get to the bottom of this question.

Are mobility scooters waterproof?

Mobility scooters are not made to be waterproof; they are electric machines made to transport mobility-impaired individuals. They are not designed to be left out in the rain and doing so could result in electrical issues. Some mobility scooters are classified as rainproof, but these tend to be the Class 3 All-Terrain types, but even these need some protection from heavy downpours.

While most mobility scooters aren’t designed to be out in heavy rain for hours at a time, this generally refers to them being left outside all day in the rain when not in use. For short periods of time, during use, in light showers, there’s no reason why your mobility scooter shouldn’t perform perfectly well. Though, it is still advisable that the scooter and all of its electrics are covered to protect them from damage.

Can a mobility scooter be used in the rain?

We have good news for you, there’s no need to cancel your trip to the zoo or your day out with your family if the forecast calls for rain. Yes, your mobility scooter can be used in the rain. That being said, mobility scooters such as the SupaScoota Supalite 4, much like power wheelchairs, are electric vehicles and as such, it is recommended that not only should you take things slower than in dry conditions, but you should also aim to keep you and the scooter covered to protect the electrics as much as possible. This is mainly necessary when the downpour is very heavy, if you find yourself in light rain, it is still advisable to keep the electrics as dry as possible, however, you are safer.

Keeping your scooter dry

Getting caught out in an unexpected downpour can cause some discomfort when your get cold and wet. There are a few ways to avoid this discomfort and protect yourself and your mobility scooter.

As a first step, it is always best to check the weather forecast if your plans for the day involve being outdoors for many hours. If you see rain predicted in the forecast you have the option to adjust your plans.

Everyone knows that British weather is unpredictable at the best of times and can change at any moment. This is why we advise you take a waterproof cape or cover with you when you take your mobility scooter out in case you get caught in a downpour, as the use of an umbrella isn’t practical when operating your scooter.

What to do if your mobility scooter gets wet?

Remember, water and electricity never mix well, so please take care to protect your scooter from the rain.

When faced with sudden changes in weather, there are a few things that you can do to protect your scooter. Depending on the severity and heaviness of the rain or snow you’re caught in, we recommend finding suitable shelter until the weather passes or at least lessens. As you’re making your way to the shelter, try to avoid larger or deep puddles.

If your scooter gets particularly wet:

  • Thoroughly dry your mobility scooter with a towel as soon as possible. Wipe down all surfaces of the scooter.
  • Allow your scooter to sit in a warm dry place for at least 12 hours to make sure any unseen water evaporates.
  • Check the operation of your scooter and tiller (including the brakes if it has them) before using the machine again.
  • If you find any inconsistencies or malfunctions, take your scooter to your provider.

Another important thing to note is to ALWAYS close your mobility scooter battery’s charging port before any use and avoid getting it wet in any circumstance.

Most scooters perform perfectly well in light showers, so don’t let the fear of a little rain put you off going out, just be prepared for whatever the weather may throw at you.
